On Wednesday 30th May at 7pm, the Sandbach Concert Series hosted their sixteenth concert at St Mary’s Church Hall. Each concert evening includes a 30 minute Spotlight Concert by local young musicians, followed by a one hour concert by top class musicians. This month’s theme was saxophones.

Cllr Carolyn Lowe with spotlight artists.
The concert opened with young musicians from around Cheshire who thrilled the audience with their enthusiasm. From beginners to more advanced young musicians such as Jamie Sharp who has just gained a place on the undergraduate course at the Royal Northern College of Music. Other young musicians including Harry Davies, Marcus Waldron, Ellen Thompson, Joshua Price, Luci Kinsey, Emily Smith, Bethan Jones, and Emily Rodgers also played at the concert.
After a sociable interval the audience was entertained by the ‘Apollo Saxophone Quartet’, members of the quartet include: Rob Buckland, Carl Raven, Andy Scott, and Jim Fieldhouse. The quartet has been together for 26 years now, and they have commissioned and premiered over 100 works. The quartet played repertoire both by contemporary classical composers such as Barbara Thompson and Will Gregory as well as some pieces that they themselves had composed. In the first half of the concert, one young musician played a piece written by Rob Buckland titled Scaredy Cat.
The quartet gave the concert a unique twist by playing to nostalgic black and white silent movies. The audience found this extremely entertaining as one video featured the character of a pig dressed up dancing around!
The evening was a great success, thanks to the support given by many people and to everyone who took part in the raffle which was raising money for the charity Home Start.
The next concert will be on Wednesday 27th June 2012 and will feature Andy Findon on flute and Geoff Eales on piano.
